How To Keep Your Brown Locks From Fading

Updated: Feb 14, 2019

As our hair grows, the richness of our brunette hair shades may fade. If you see this happening to your hair and wish to prevent it, here are some tips you should take into consideration to keep your brown locks from turning brassy and orange on the ends.

1. Use hair products that will enhance the color of your hair and avoid using shampoos, hair styling products or cremes that contain alcohol or sulphates, as they are known to remove hair color.

2. Deep condition your hair at least once a week. If your hair is damaged and not well nourished, dry hair tends to fade with time. Make sure you keep your hair hydrated and moisturized with hair repair treatment such as Moroccan Oil Hydrating Mask. This is to ensure that your hair is healthier, retains its color and remains shiny and vibrant.

3. Limit heat styling tools. Try to avoid heat styling products as much as possible, as they are known to do real damage to your hair. Heat will dry out your hair and dry hair leads to hair color fading. If you do decide to use heat styling hair products, be sure to use Unite 7 Seconds leave - in Conditioner on wet hair before drying it.

4. If possible, shampoo your hair less frequently. When washing it, use cool water. Hot water removes color from hair and causes frizziness. If you have oily hair, use Batiste 'Beautiful Brunette' dry shampoo in between washes. This helps to absorb oil from the roots of your hair and also make it look fuller without leaving white in your hair. It will also provide a hint of brunette hair color. And for those who have darker brown hair shades, use the Batiste 'Divine Dark' dry shampoo. It also helps to cover grays. Both are highly recommended.

5. Limit Sun Exposure. Ultra Violet Rays tend to sun-bleach hair, causing dryness and frizziness to your hair. Make sure to protect your hair when you are exposed to the sun for long periods of time. Protect your hair from sun damage using Unite 7 Seconds Leave-in Conditioner. There are also hair sunscreens you can use specifically made for dark strands like yours. There are various shampoos, conditioners and leave in conditioners you can choose from that will help protect your hair from the sun's UVs. See the list of products here.

6. If you are swimming, it is important to protect your hair while exposed to chlorine. Be sure to soak your hair in clear water before you get into a public pool. Your hair soaks up chemicals and water like a sponge. But once your hair has already absorbed water, it will not absorb much of anything else, including chlorine. Wetting your hair before swimming can help protect your hair from fading and drying because of the chlorine. Be sure to use UNITE Weekender Shampoo once a week to remove chlorine and product buildup.
